Answer: Insert a screwdriver in the plug hole and get a rough top movement. Screw in the plug threaded part down center till it touches the piston. Make a reference mark. Gently rotate crank till piston touches. Mark again. Split the difference of two marks. -

Does this tool release the compression from the cylinder?
Answer: The threads are not that tight, so it may release pressure at a slow rate. The tool may not work well with high dome pistons, but should work fine with flat top pistons. -

Will this work on an outboard motor?
Answer: Yes, but it is important to understand the specific requirements for finding top dead center in outboard motors. -
