Dystopian Editorial Review
**** "Masterminds: Payback" is the captivating conclusion to a thrilling trilogy by Gordon Korman, widely praised for its compelling narrative and rich themes of friendship and forgiveness. Readers have found the story to be a true page-turner, filled with excitement reminiscent of beloved tales like "The Goonies." Many fans of the series expressed their desire for an additional sequel, envisioning the main characters navigating their college years and even starting families of their own. Drawing comparisons to the "Divergent" series, the book uniquely grapples with the concepts of dystopia and utopia, particularly through its unexpected twists involving a "Stepford Wives" community. The book effectively entertains while inviting readers to ponder deeper moral questions, including the nature vs. nurture debate—though some reviewers noted a lack of resolution on this theme, which may leave certain expectations unfulfilled. Despite some critiques about the handling of complex themes, the series stands out for its originality and fun storytelling. The accessible writing style makes it suitable for its intended audience, particularly older elementary school kids. Readers appreciate the blend of adventure and thought-provoking elements, underscoring the importance of resilience and truth. In conclusion, "Masterminds: Payback" has struck a chord with its audience, emerging as a favorite among Korman's works, especially for young readers who crave a blend of excitement and moral inquiry. **
