The Alkanet Root Powder is a natural colorant that can be used for various purposes such as making soap, lip balms, and even coloring finishing oil for wood. The powder may or may not require a mordant depending on the type of substance being colored. It is not entirely soluble and the solid particles may sink to the bottom while coloring. The powder is delivered as a coarse powder with some little twigs and hulls in it that must be sifted and ground for better use. It can color soap to a greyish purple shade that may not be constant. Though it has a foul smell, the scent goes away within 24 hours leaving a beautiful color. It may not be incorporated into Shea or Coco butter and may not be suitable for paper dyeing. It has been used for soap making, and some claim it worked well for sensitive skin.
