The book covers basic math concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and provides non-threatening exercises that progress through the learning stages for students with math difficulties. The use of concrete math manipulatives, such as Cuisenaire rods, is essential for teaching basic math concepts to individuals with math difficulties. The mental math technique called bridging, which teaches how to add and subtract using a number line, is also covered. The book comes with a CD that provides all the necessary materials, and activities also cover the area model of multiplication and addition by partitioning numbers. Chapters 5, 6 & 7 have proven to be the most helpful to families. The concrete-pictorial-abstract approach helps many people with math problems and is used by Singapore math incidentally. There are additional books by Bird, but "Overcoming Difficulties with Number" is a great place to start.
