Rated: Unrated Format: DVD Comedy Editorial Review
The "Charley Chase Collection - Volume 2" has garnered enthusiastic acclaim from customers, particularly for its rich retrospective on the works of Charley Chase, one of the unsung heroes of silent comedy. Reviewers express great appreciation for the collection's restoration, noting the excellent picture quality and production values of the six shorts it features, which run approximately 20 minutes each. Fans of silent comedies are treated to original and clever gags, with Chase's subtle, relatable acting setting him apart from his contemporaries like Charlie Chaplin and Fatty Arbuckle. Customers have highlighted that Chase's humor tends to be more sophisticated than traditional slapstick, appealing to those who may not usually enjoy silent films. His portrayal of a relatable everyman caught in absurd situations resonates well, with specific shorts like “Dog Shy,” “His Wooden Wedding,” and “Bromo and Juliet” receiving particular praise for their comedic inventiveness. While reviews commend the entertainment value provided by the collection, some viewers expressed disappointment regarding the short length of the special feature biography on Chase. Nevertheless, it is evident that the collection is a must-have for silent comedy enthusiasts and those interested in the historical context of early film comedy. The set is touted as a treasure trove of remastered comedic gems that serve as a fitting tribute to a comedian who had a profound impact on the genre but whose life was tragically cut short. **
